Yum! This cheery little cupcake looks good enough to eat (but please don't!) I designed this little guy based on a felt pincushion I made last Christmas for my friend Ruth. She absolutely loved the one I made her and ever since I've wanted to design a crochet version for me. This little guy will hold all of my needles and pins whilst looking super adorable on my craft desk too. I used bright embroidery floss to give him sprinkles but I don't even think I needed to - if you use pins with coloured heads they already look like real sprinkles! He's super quick & easy to make and only uses a small amount of yarn - a perfect "stash buster" project!
I am offering this pattern for free, so as always I ask that if you would like to thank me perhaps you could subscribe to my blog in some way. If you do make your own little cupcake please post your pictures on my
Facebook page, I would love to see!
Happy hooking!

Difficulty: Beginner Friendly - Suitable for those new to amigurumi
Must know how to work in the round, increase, and invisible decrease.
This pattern uses the following U.S stitches & abbreviations:
- st = stitch
- sc = single crochet (double crochet for UK)
- sl st = slip stitch
- 2tog = 2 stitches together (decrease)
Do not join rounds - work in a continuous spiral unless stated otherwise. It is a good idea to use a stitch marker to mark the end of each round (You can use a bent paper clip or hair grip!) My notes, tips and assembly instructions are in purple italics.
Cupcake:
Starting at the top of the cupcake and working downwards to the base.
In beige yarn:
Round 1) Magic Circle with 6sc (6)
Round 2) 2sc in each st (12)
Round 3) 1sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (18)
Round 4) 2sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (24)
Round 5) 3sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (30)
Round 6) 4sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (36)
Round 7) 5sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (42)
Round 8) 6sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (48)
Round 9) Back loop only: 1sc in each st (48)
Round 10-11) 1sc in each st; for 2 rounds total (48)
Round 12) 6sc then 2 tog, repeat until end of the round (42)
Round 13) 1sc in each st (42)
Round 14) 5sc then 2tog, repeat until end of the round (36)
Round 15) 1sc in each st (36)
Round 16) 4sc then 2tog, repeat until end of the round (30)
Round 17) 1sc in each st (30)
Round 18) 3sc then 2tog, repeat until end of the round (24)
Round 19) Back loop only: 1sc in each st (24)
Attach 6mm safety eyes between rounds 16 and 17 (mine are roughly 4 stitches apart for your reference). Start stuffing your cupcake.
Round 20) 2sc then 2tog, repeat until end of the round (18)
Round 21) 1sc then 2tog, repeat until end of the round (12)
Round 22) 2tog all the way around (6)
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Add in any more stuffing you need until you are happy with the shape of your cupcake. Weave yarn tail in and out the front loops of the remaining stitches (using a blunt end yarn needle) and pull tight to close.
How to give your cupcake a flat base to stand on: Knot yarn. Pull the tail up through the bottom of the cupcake and out through the top of the cupcake, pulling the yarn tight. This should pull the base "up" into the cupcake giving you a flat base to stand on. When you are happy with how flat your base is (whilst holding the yarn taut) take your yarn needle through a stitch on the top of the cupcake and through the loop created to form a knot. If your base still isn't flat enough just repeat this process again! Don't worry about the knot showing on the top - we're going to cover it with icing!
Icing:
In white yarn:
Round 1) Magic Circle with 6sc (6)
Round 2) 2sc in each st (12)
Round 3) 1sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (18)
Round 4) 2sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (24)
Round 5) 3sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (30)
Round 6) 4sc, 2sc in next st, repeat until end of the round (36)
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Cherry:
In red yarn:
Round 1) Magic Circle with 6sc (6)
Round 2) 2sc in each st (12)
Round 3-4) 1sc in each st; for 2 rounds total (12)
Slip stitch into the next stitch and fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
Assemble your cupcake in the following order:
1. Sew the icing to the top of the cupcake using a whip stitch.
2. Sew the cherry to the icing using a ladder stitch.
3. Embroider a face using black embroidery floss.
4. (Optional) Embroider sprinkles using assorting colours of embroidery floss.

I absolutely love the way you have put the hints in on how to finish off your patterns, it's where I usually mess up!! I have a little hint for other amigurumi crocheters, I get a sore end of my index finger on the hand that I hold the work with, I went to the chemist and purchased a rubber finger stall, no more sore finger!!!

Thanks so much Patricia! It's good to get feedback on the patterns it's so helpful. That's a great tip about the rubber finger stall, I know how you feel I get a sore index finger too! Thanks for sharing x
